Seminary Ramblings

Updates from life at seminary

Unless I am con…

Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason — I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other — my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise. God help me.Amen.

-Martin Luther, before the Diet of Worms, 1521

Two thoughts:
1. 2017 will mark the 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation with the nailing of Luther’s 95 theses onto the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. I suspect it will be a great time and hopefully a good opportunity to revisit some of the thoughts of the Reformation.

2. Notice the importance of conscience in Luther’s famous quote above. I really want to write a paper on the importance of the conscience in the thought of Martin Luther.
